Religion and Society: From Conservative Trends in the USA to Ethnic Conflicts in Greater Russia

Paolo Naso and Fulvio Scaglione

The Founding Fathers of the United States declared that all men are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. After September 11, Bush leveraged this sacred national ethos to motivate and lead the country in its fight against international terrorism. Today, Obama will have to contend with the most extreme elements of the Christian right, which remain strongly present in American society. For Putin, it will be extremely difficult to bring unity to the disintegrative forces created by the myriad ethnicities and religions that characterize his country, starting with the Chechen Muslim irredentism, where religion and politics merge into a mix that is challenging to resolve.

Paolo Naso teaches Political Science at the University of Rome La Sapienza and is a member of the Italian Association for North American Studies (AISNA). He has been the director of the monthly magazine Confronti and the TV program Protestantesimo. He also collaborates with Micromega and Limes. His work focuses on the role of religions in various international contexts, including the Middle East, Northern Ireland, the Balkans, South Africa, and the United States. His publications include Come una città sulla collina. Le radici puritane del movimento per i diritti civili negli Usa, Il Sogno e la storia. La vita e la testimonianza di Martin Luther King, and God Bless America. Le religioni degli americani.

Fulvio Scaglione, Deputy Director of the weekly Famiglia Cristiana, specializes in international affairs. He has been a correspondent from Moscow for many years, covering events in Russia and the former Soviet republics, Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Middle East. His publications include Bye Bye Baghdad, La Russia è tornata, and I cristiani e il Medio Oriente
