Performance di Kathakali

Kathakali originated likely many centuries ago, but the form we admire today dates back to the 17th century. It originated in the southern tip of India and is a classical dance-drama form that narrates stories through mime.

The stories are drawn from the great Hindu epics such as the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Among all the dances of India, Kathakali is the richest in "mudras" or hand gestures.

Kalamandalam Karanukaran was born in southern India. He began studying Kathakali at the age of 13 and was trained by two of the most important Kathakali artists. After completing his studies, he performed extensively throughout the state. Later, for a period of four years, he taught at the International Center for Kathakali in New Delhi. In 1978, he was invited to Paris to teach and perform. Since arriving in France, he has traveled to various countries including Belgium, Luxembourg, Wales, Switzerland, London, and Canada. He has collaborated with numerous theater groups and companies, including the International Centre of Peter Brook. Currently, he is the only Kathakali teacher in Europe.
