I Will Live. The Story of the Girl Who Defied Islam

Lale Gül

Music is not allowed, dating is prohibited, having friendships with the opposite sex is illegal, dressing and wearing makeup is inappropriate, going out at night is not permitted, celebrating birthdays is forbidden, and working with men is not allowed.

Ik ga leven (I Will Live) is the autobiographical novel by Lale Gül, a publishing phenomenon that has sold over two hundred thousand copies and forced the author to live under protection. It is a concentrated revelation about the life of confinement and deprivation that a girl belonging to an ultra-religious Muslim community is subjected to, serving as a manifesto for the liberation of women from religious patriarchy.

Lale Gül, a writer born in Amsterdam to Turkish Islamic parents, studies Dutch literature at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. Until the age of seventeen, she attends a Quran school on weekends. In her book, she challenges everything she has been taught by her community.
