Mafia body. The Italian conflict

Giovanni Impastato

Giovanni Impastato

The meeting will be moderated by Pierangelo Giovanetti.

More than thirty years have passed since the death of Peppino Impastato, a symbol of a strong civil consciousness that did not hesitate to raise his voice against illegality in his homeland: Sicily. Tragically, Impastato is also a symbol of how voices are silenced in bodies. Bodies that mark the chapters of a "war" that has lasted for decades and has one of its most dramatic consequences in the division of a country between those who can freely aspire to a future of freedom and fulfillment and those who cannot, because the conditions of safety and legality do not exist. In this battle, state entities and institutions, as well as many, many ordinary people, are engaged. Giovanni Impastato has taken up his brother's legacy as a daily commitment against crime, telling us about Sicily and the quintessential Italian conflict: that involving the mafia.

For thirty-five years, Giovanni Impastato has taken on the task of defending the memory of his brother Peppino, who was killed by the mafia on May 9, 1978. Along with their mother Felicia, who passed away in 2004, and their closest friends, he has inherited the commitment to fight against the power of organized crime and its implications, freeing himself from his roots linked to a mafia family. He has courageously denounced what happened to Peppino, rehabilitating his memory and obtaining justice. Today, he continues his commitment to direct testimony to raise awareness among new generations, presenting his brother and mother as examples of lives dedicated to the renewal of society through a commitment to denouncing and fighting the mafia.
