Environmental migrations of Europe.

Moderated by Roberto Barbiero, technical representative of the Provincial Agency for Environmental Protection (APPA)

Floods, landslides, fires fueled by unusual heatwaves, storms: climate change is making events that can take away our homes increasingly devastating and frequent, sometimes in just one night. When air, water, land, and fire strike, destroying everything, people become "displaced," just numbers in a database. Most manage to rise again, rebuild, and return. But some cannot and are forced to leave.

Europe’s Climate Migrants is an exclusive investigation by Euronews conducted in six European countries that demonstrates how climate migration is already a reality in Europe. Invisible to the eyes of the media and public opinion, but increasingly frequent.

European climate migrants are everywhere and have stories of uprooting, trauma, and exodus, but also of resurrection. They tell tales of fragile rural areas depopulating and cities unprepared to meet the challenges of extreme weather events. These stories expose the impotence of institutions, unable to solve the legal puzzle connecting migration to climate, as well as to protect and assist internally displaced persons.

The investigation Europe’s Climate Migrants was made possible through the support of journalismfunds.eu.
