Europe in the Pandemic: What Balance, What Future?

Moderated by Elisa Dossi, RAI journalist.

How did Europe react to the Covid-19 emergency? What differences characterized the policies of the EU member states? And beyond the Union, what happened in the country of Brexit? How did two such important issues—the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union and the pandemic that also swept through the Queen's country—interact, if at all? Barbara Serra, a highly experienced television journalist, the first non-native anchorwoman to present a news program in English on Channel 5 and now a correspondent for Al Jazeera English, navigates the last months of the Old Continent with an authoritative perspective on international politics and the new cultural dynamics shaping the current landscape.

Her extensive work experience gives her a unique role in understanding the contemporary cultural scene, enabling her to embrace and channel the cultural influences of the Anglo-Saxon, Arab, and Italian worlds.

Born in Milan and raised in Copenhagen, Barbara Serra moved to London in 1993. She graduated in International Relations from the London School of Economics and earned a master's degree in Journalism from City University. She speaks Italian, English, Danish, and French. Her career began in 2000 at the BBC, and in 2003, she worked for Sky News before moving to Channel 5. In 2006, she began her collaboration with Al Jazeera English as a presenter and correspondent, conducting important investigations from Israel, the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and Washington. She has received numerous literary and journalistic awards, including the Caccuri Prize and the Com&te Prize. She is also the second woman—after Nobel laureate Rita Levi Montalcini—to receive the prestigious 12 Apostoli Prize.
